It is estimated that 1.5 million Americans have a form of lupus, an acute and chronic (lifelong) autoimmune disease in which the immune system is unbalanced, causing inflammation and tissue damage to virtually every organ system in the body. November 2008 marked 50 years since a drug has been approved for the treatment of lupus. There is hope on the horizon, and with your help we can find better treatments and a cure.
On a personal note, I included the picture with the kids because it shows what most of us take for granted, freedom to work and recreate as we please. Most lupus patients have to avoid the sun because it causes rashes, sometimes rashes that leave deep scars. They are often too tired to function in daily living much less take a hike in the mountains with thier children. We need to give our lupus patients their lives back. Lupus research is a path to that goal.
